10 Christmas Questions with Lewis Moody
A great autumn for England – who stood out for you?
For me quality is about consistency of performance.
For that reason Ben Youngs has been my stand out player from the autumn. Arguably he could have been man of the match in every game this autumn.
Back to his best when attacking and sniping around the fringes of the breakdown.
Are England clear favourites for 6 Nations now?
No, I believe Ireland and England will both go in as equal favourites, with the possibility of a Grand Slam decider in that last match between those 2 teams.
What has Eddie Jones brought to the set up or changed?
He is a rugby tactician with a great understanding of the game.
But his real strength is his ability to manage his players, challenge them to perform through simple motivational methods and competition for places.
This has allowed him to create enormous strength in depth.
How does the current side compare to the great 2003 World Cup winning side you played in?
You can’t compare eras, but this time they could go on to exceed the feats of that great side if they can keep improving on their performances.
Are there any players outside the squad or injured players to come back in you think will improve the team?
Yes Maro Itoje, Jack Nowell, Manu Tuilagi to name but a few.
Best players you played with or against?
The Most skilful player I ever played with was Geordan Murphy of Leicester and Ireland.
Your most embarrassing or funny moment on the pitch?
When I was 11 whilst playing centre in my excitement when about to score a try I ran straight into the post and knocked myself out cold. I felt from then that a career in the forwards was the only sensible option!
Why is your nickname Mad Dog?
It’s because of the manner in which I threw myself whole heartedly into the game without caring what danger or risk of injury I might be in – the team came first before my health! One particular England teammate mischievously suggested it was actually because I played like a puppy chasing cars on the M1!
Fantasy Christmas Dinner – who are the 4 guests you would love to have at it?
Walter Payton, Will Ferrell, Jennifer Aniston & Jesus as it’s his birthday so it would be rude not to invite him!
Worst dressed England player you played with?
Martin Johnson, who generally lived in his Adidas stash!
